"Hey you, where is my coffee?"
Many, many moons ago, I was an intern. Yes yes, calm down people, Elanna Rubenstein didn't just land this gig without any experience, I had to work hard, very hard.
It was the Spring of 2010. I was a wee fetus of a college student, or technically a junior going into my senior year. I needed to find myself an internship to go along with my degree so I could be a real force to be reckoned with when I entered the post-grad world.
I was luckily blessed enough to get an internship in the sports department at none other than...CHANNEL 3! Go figure right? because I work here now?! what are the chances....
Anyway, why I am blogging about my experience as an intern is because now two years into my post-intern-real-job-title position here at WFSB I have had quite a few interns fall under my wing.
Summer 2010 Flashback: My Internship
Aside from getting to hangout in the sports department with none other than John Holt and Joe Zone, I got to spend quite a lot of time with none other than Tom Z.
Joe and John taught me the in's and out's of working in the sports department. Meanwhile...Tom taught me that you can look at your gas gauge and based on what side the tiny triangle is pointed you can see what side the gas tank is on without getting out of the car. He also taught me that if you get onions and peppers on your Subway sandwich, ask them to add them to your sandwich before they toast it so the cheese melts with the onions and peppers. Brilliant...I know...all Tom.
I learned a lot about broadcast sports and what it takes to create a great sportscast, I also learned here that I am better off behind the camera...I remember my attempt at a "Stand-Up" at Bark in the Park Night at Rock Cats Stadium, lets just say the dogs barks sounded better than I did.
Present Day: How I Now Treat Interns
We have quite a lot of interns that come and go in this building. Some turn out to be true goldmines like myself and are such amazing interns that they get hired a year later in a real-job capacity.
And we have some that I am not quite sure passed the 6th grade.
But either way, the opportunities we present our interns are amazing and I am not only pimping out our internship program because my BFF Tracy runs the program, or because I am the poster child for a successful internship. But because in my two years here I have meet some really amazing talent.
For example, this past semester, Emily and Olivia showered me with gifts on my birthday. Even after I fed them White Chocolate Cheesecake M&M's
I have received numerous cards of thanks and the delivery of some baked goods because I have been such a good mentor. I believe that stems from the fact that I was such an amazing intern that I know what it takes to have a great experience here. Whether that be getting tips about how to get the best sandwich at Subway or how to properly call a police department.
Either way, if this blog was inspiring enough and you or someone you know might want to experience the wonderful world of in the form of an internship....
